would be whidbey…and it was!

Taylor Seyer The Fish film shoot

So from May 5th through the 13th, 2007, I spent some time on Whidbey Island outside of Seattle, WA. Director/CG artist Sam Jorgensen (with those two dots over the “o”) shot his movie “The Fish”.

The cast and crew were great to be around. Of course after living together, working together, and of course partying together we became very close. Sparkling cider was smashed, strange women were saved from the the hands of the seemingly perverse, and chest hair was pulled, literally (sorry Sam!).

I mixed on set, and boomed.

I made up the sound department with occasional help from the various driftwood I clamped the Sennheiser 416 and lavs to. I learned the best way to keep a lavalier transmitter pack from the rain, mist, sand and actor-back-sweat (mmm!) is to wrap the pack in a condom. That’s right, slap a rubber on that baby and you’re ready to go!

Also on set was:

Ajae Clearway….Producer
Miguel Alvarez….AD
Naiti Gamez…..AC
Scott F….AC
Lyndi Breuer….
Ellie Fenton….Key Grip
Autumn….Best Boy
Jess H…..Gaffer
Katja Straub…..Set Dresser
Matt….Prop, Actor
Christine….Actress
Canadian….Actor
Justin….PA

Whidbey was beautiful, and quite an experience.

I’d go again in a heartbeat!

the beginning

“so, why don’t you make it?”
 ~gary powell

so that’s just what’s going to happen. through a process of realizing the knowledge i have under my belt after 30-some-odd
film shoots, four years of film school, and a thirst for cultural expansion, i’ve gained the confidence and ambition to actually make a movie. the process is coming along quite nicely. blake looney of tiburon, california has agreed to come onboard as story writer. already an accomplished novelist, blake’s concept of reality should manifest quite an interesting plotline.  julie espinosa has graceously agreed to adapt blake’s story into a screenplay.  she’s recently been involved in some story-to-screenplay workshops, and has film school and several shoots to pull from.  a few other’s have given me the light for putting their names on the crew list. as the script comes along, more progress will be made in the crew department.  so these are the early stages of the process.

this uncharted territory fills me with delight and the heebie-jeebies!! to help ease my worries, my friend and occasional co-worker, jenn garrison of ginjar productions, met with julie and i last weekend.  jenn is the go-to gal for everything film.  she helped lay out the timeline of the pre-production process, along with tips on hiring crew, grant writing, and choosing/renting equipment.

so what next?  well, as the story is manifesting in california, it’s time to get some info together about grant writing.  i’m hoping the budget will increase to 10k by the time we shoot.  it will be a matter of finding the right people interested in the project and willing to back up their interest.

 i’ll keep you posted…
